The term endometriosis means a usually benign disease of the uterus. Endometriosis describes the presence of endometrium outside the uterine cavity, and has often a painful course of the disease. Commonly, endometriosis occurs in the lower part of the pelvic or abdominal cavity and most often affects the ovaries. The cause of endometriosis is not yet known, but is accepted as a cause of infertility in women. Endometriosis is regarded as the second most common disease of the uterus.
