Growing pains: When the “Big” hurts

Pain while the growth in preschool and school children is often not taken seriously. But you are not forms difficult to detect. Most of the time the attacks start in the evening, when the child is sleeping. It cries and pleads for about 10 to 15 minutes long, it is pain in the knees, ankles or arms. This Phase lasts about two weeks. Then for a year and a half back rest with the “children’s theatre”. This is a Scam or a serious Problem?

Diagnosis needs experience

Many textbooks do not mention growing pains or devote the complaints only a few lines. The Problem is not rare. A quarter to half of all children between five and ten years, suffers from time to time, often two to three times in the year, during a few weeks.

The only feature of growth, the pain, especially of the arms and legs, and sometimes also of the feet, exchange are pain side the left or the right. Neither redness nor swelling, rash or fever. Laboratory tests remain negative. Usually the attacks are in the evening or at night, rarely during the day. The diagnosis is therefore not difficult because of the small patient strength in Pain and the pain place rarely safe information can make.

Causes still unclear

The cause of the pain when growth could be the stretching of the Tendons and ligaments. “The Tendons and ligaments do not grow so fast, if the body stretches at night, and with a thrust of 0.2 mm is growing”, says Dr. med. Wolfgang’s son, a General practitioner from Schwalmtal. As a therapy, heat is recommended, for example, through Massage, moor albums or infrared irradiation.

If it is particularly bad, it can also be a pain reliever used such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. “Very important is also the contribution of the parents is,” advises son. You have to take the complaints of the child seriously. You can comfort it, and read it may be a story or you sing together, because that distraction reduces pain.
